Two contrasting weeks

Posted: 28th June 2010

Two weeks ago I played in the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open which was my first event since my maiden victory on The Ladies European Tour in Holland. Lots of people have asked me how I feel after my first win and I would say that I feel much more relaxed about playing as I now have a two-year exemption on The Ladies European Tour. However, I still want to improve and I hope to continue with my good season. A number of experienced players including Gwladys Nocera and Martina Eberl have told me that the first win is always the hardest so that has given me a lot of confidence.

The weather in Switzerland was pretty terrible. Even though they are used to a lot of rain over there, the course was extremely wet and in the Pro-Am on the Wednesday, I had to come in on the seventh hole and they cancelled the day.

I got up the following day ready to play because I was due out early but it was still raining and they postponed the start so I went back to bed! The rain kept coming down so they decided to cancel the first day's play and make it a three day tournament, which was fine because we’re quite used to playing events over three rounds.

People may wonder if I was under any more pressure than usual having won the previous Ladies European Tour event, but I didn't feel under pressure at all. I just wanted to continue playing like I did in Holland. Unfortunately, I struggled in the first round and although I hit some good shots, all the bad ones seemed to find the water so I couldn't score well. I finished five over par for the first day which meant I had to shoot low in the second round to give myself a chance of making the cut. I shot level on the Saturday and played well on the back nine, which gave me a good feeling for Portugal, but unfortunately I missed the cut.

It was my twenty-first birthday on the Sunday and because I missed the cut, I was able to go out with some of the girls on the Saturday night to celebrate. We went out in Ascona and I had a wonderful night with my friends. I also received some great presents! I even managed to get home for a few days before travelling to Portugal for last week's event.

I am so pleased that I managed to have another good week in Portugal. I played some very solid golf on the first two days and shot two-under par on both days. I was in the top 10 going into the final round and carded a five-under par 67 which I was thrilled with and I finished fourth overall. The great thing is that I am climbing the table for the 2011 Solheim Cup team and also the World Rankings. I am now 7th in the Solheim Cup points and have gone to 124th in the Rolex World Rankings. It all gives me a lot of confidence for the weeks ahead.
