Fourth week on the bounce
Posted: 12th August 2010
This week I’m at Conwy Golf Club for the S4C Wales Ladies Championship of Europe. I flew straight here from the AIB Ladies Irish Open and I am going back to Hamburg afterwards for a well-earned rest as it has been a busy few weeks.
The week of the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale was a hectic one as I had quite a few interviews to do, due to the fact that I am a member there. It was good fun though and great to meet up with some old faces. I was drawn with Paula Creamer and Catriona Matthew for the first two days which was great. The first day was a struggle as I was four-over par after five holes so put myself under a bit of pressure. I finished the day on five-over par which wasn’t too bad considering my start but I was a little bit disappointed.
Day two was completely different and I struck my fairway woods much better and managed to shoot one-under par to make the cut by two shots so I was delighted. Catriona had a bad day and scored a ten on a par four which showed that even the best golfers can make big mistakes. She missed the cut but Paula finished on the same score as me so we played together again on the Saturday. Saturday was a bad day and having struggled all week with my irons, I had little confidence in them and ended up shooting seven-over par.
After a good session on the practice round on the Saturday afternoon, I felt much more confident for the Sunday. I was playing on my own and was first out so it was an early start. It was great though and I flew round in just over two and a half hours and shot four-under par so I was delighted as I climbed up the field by twenty places to finish fifty-fourth overall.
I was supposed to be flying back to Hamburg on the Sunday night but they cancelled my flight so I couldn’t fly until Monday morning which was a bit frustrating as it meant I only had one night at home before flying to Ireland. I got to Ireland on the Tuesday and played a practice round on the Wednesday before the Pro-Am on the Thursday.
The tournament in Ireland was being played at Killeen Castle which is where the Solheim Cup is being played next year. The course was fantastic, fairly 'linksy' even though it is not on the coast and was designed by Jack Nicklaus. I didn't play very well in the first round and shot three-over par so I had some making up to do in round two. I played really nicely on the Saturday and shot two-under par. I really struggled on the last day with my putting so unfortunately I couldn't continue with my climb up the leaderboard so I finished tied fortieth.
