After a career best six-under par, bogey-free round on Saturday, Flory held on to a two-shot lead heading into the final round to win the ABN AMRO Ladies Open in Holland and claim her maiden title. Flory finished two shots ahead of her nearest rival, Scotland’s Krystie Caithness. The victory earned Flory €37,500 and has shot her up to fourth in the Ladies European Tour’s Henderson Money List.
This has meant that Flory has already achieved her goals that she set at the beginning of the season and will now play in the Evian Masters and the Ricoh Women’s British Open, which is being played on her home course, Royal Birkdale at the end of July. It also takes her to ninth in the Solheim Cup rankings.
Flory was a little nervous at the start of her round and this showed with a three-putt to bogey the first hole. However, the nerves settled with a birdie at the par-five third hole and despite bogeying the fifth, she kept a level head. A birdie on the sixth hole kept her ahead of the rest of the field and a further birdie on the eleventh saw her regain the two-shot lead that she had started with. With her lead remaining intact as she played the eighteenth, Flory’s nerves were kept at bay and she finished in style with a birdie in front of a packed crowd at the Golfclub Broekpolder.
Flory, just two weeks away from her twenty-first birthday was quite emotional when she was presented with her trophy. She said, ‘I can’t believe it. I didn’t expect to win, it just means so much to me.’ Flory’s whole family will have much to celebrate after her victory as it was a combined family effort.
Caddying for her during the week was her younger cousin Ella who surprisingly is not a golfer. Her father, Tim who is a teaching professional based in Hamburg coaches Flory and will be delighted with his daughter’s success. Flory looks forward to a week off at home in Hamburg whilst she lets her victory sink in before heading off to Switzerland for the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open.
